The Adelphi Theatre is the West End home of Kinky Boots, the hit Broadway musical from Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein. The production, from director Jerry Mitchell, had been highly anticipated even before it was officially announced and appears in the capital on the back of many Tony Awards.

The musical began life as the 2005 film of the same name, which featured well known actors in lead roles, and now it appears on the stage with equally talented performers bringing it to life. It first appeared in Chicago in 2012 before its Broadway debut and has since been seen in locations around the world.

Its story focuses on a shoe factory on hard times. Charlie Price has just inherited it from his father but the business is not doing well enough and if it goes under he feels like he won’t be following in his father’s steps.  To avoid failure he takes an unexpected step when he takes on a surprising business partner in Lola. An entertainer and drag queen, she has some outrageous shoe designs and soon it becomes clear that they have more in common than first appears.

Along the way, audiences hear musical numbers like Not My Father’s Son, What A Woman Wants and Everybody Say Yeah, among others.

Cyndi Lauper is perhaps best known for hit songs like Girls Just Want To Have Fun and others, in addition to hit albums like She’s So Unusual, however her work has also included plenty of acting roles, with her behind-the-scenes work on Kinky Boots the latest in a long line of success stories.

Kinky Boots runs at the West End’s Adelphi Theatre.
