Show & Venue Information

The swinging sixties are back! Hairspray will return to the West End, this time staged at the London Coliseum. This all-singing, all-dancing musical has been adapted into a film starring Zac Efron and Queen Latifah, but there’s nothing like seeing the story unfold on stage. So, if you want to see an upbeat show with a political message, as well as Michael Ball returning to a previous role, you’ll need to book your tickets for Hairspray now.

Set in 1960s Baltimore, audiences meet Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with even bigger hair who auditions for The Corny Collins Show, a locally broadcasted dance show for teens. Causing a stir with her dance moves, she catches the eye of Link Larkin, the show’s heartthrob and the pair hit it off. But, what happens when Tracy discusses her views on racial segregation? See if Tracy Turnblad will be able to become ‘Miss Teenage Hairspray’, or whether Amber von Tussle and her mother, Velma will steal the crown for another year.

Exploring real-life attitudes and opinions of 1960s America, be swept away in the iconic soundtrack, with songs including “Good Morning Baltimore”, “Welcome to the 60s” and its anthemic final number “You Can’t Stop the Beat”. An entertaining, thoughtful and colourful show, you’ll want to catch Hairspray on its return to London, coming to the Coliseum in 2020.

Did you know?

Michael Ball will reprise his performance as Tracy Turnblad in the production. Ball will also be appearing in Les Miserables: All-Star Staged Concert at the Gielgud Theatre this summer.

Casting for Tracy Turnblad is to be announced, but previous productions and film adaptations have cast a newcomer to the role.

Hairspray was nominated for 11 Olivier Awards in 2008.
