Reinventing the American musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! returns to the Great White Way, currently at the Circle in the Square Theatre. As a community is shaped by daily political events that impact everyone, enjoy a dark and daring reinterpretation of one of Broadway’s earliest musical, with the New York Times saying ‘the coolest new show on Broadway is a 1943 musical’. So, if you’re looking to listen to classic musical theatre tunes in a revitalised fashion, you’ll want to see Oklahoma!

Stripped down to reveal the darker psychological truths at its core, the revival of Oklahoma! tells a story of a community circling its wagons against an outsider, and the violence of the frontier that shaped America. Set in a plywood barn with guns hanging freely, enjoy the territorial musical unfold at the intimate Broadway venue 75 years since it was performed, in a revival the New York Times hailed as ‘stimulating, jolting and fresh’.

Oklahoma! is considered to be one of Broadway’s golden age musicals, currently being performed as part of a Broadway renaissance in older texts. Audiences can currently see the revival of Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune starring Audra McDonald, as well as Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. But, if you’re looking for a patriotic musical which is part of the Great White Way’s history, you’ll want to see Oklahoma!
